Nissan's Battery Plant

Nissan North America, Inc. has opened up its new battery plant in Smyrna, Tennessee. Nissan's new plant is the largest lithium-ion automotive battery plant in the United States. The plant has already started to produce the lithium-ion packs that will be used in the Nissan LEAF. Nissan will be able to produce about 200,000 battery packs a year. The battery plant has hired more than 300 workers so far but could produce as many as 1,000 more jobs.  The new plant is adjacent to Nissan's Smyrna vehicle plant where the 2013 LEAF will begin production early next year.

Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn stated "The opening of this facility in Tennessee supports our goal of making zero-emissions mobility a reality through American jobs and American manufacturing."

Nissan has sold 8,330 LEAFs in the United States so far this year. More than 46,000 LEAFs have been sold worldwide. Early next year Nissan will release an updated version of the LEAF.
